Local Japanese cities have various festivals, but the Nebuta Festival is the biggest summer event in Aomori city, and most Japanese know it. The Nebuta Festival most likely originated from a mix of the Tanabata Festival, a celebration of the stars, and a Japanese custom called Nemuri Nagashi; the focal points of the festival are floats called Nebuta. Many festival dancers (Haneto) dance during the festival; they show off their moves and chant “Rassera! Rassera!” cheering on the floats' pullers and rousing the audience's excitement. The music of the Hayashi festival musicians, who play drums, wooden flutes, and hand cymbals in the parade, reverberates along the route. The Nebuta Museum WA-RASSE is a facility that introduces the history and charms of the Aomori Nebuta Festival. At the museum, you can experience every aspect of the festival.
