About Kochi Castle

A Castle That Survived the Ages

Originally completed in 1611 and later reconstructed after a major fire, Kochi Castle retains many historic structures. Kochi Castle (高知城) is the only castle in Japan where both the main tower (tenshu) and the lord's residence (honmaru goten) remain in their original form. The castle sits atop Mount Otakasaka, offering sweeping panoramic views of Kochi city and the surrounding mountains.

Designated a Designated as Important Cultural Properties, the castle represents an outstanding example of Edo-period castle architecture. Our expert guide will walk you through its defensive ingenuity, its samurai history, and the stories of the powerful Yamanouchi clan who ruled the domain for over 250 years.
